Team Progress
Writing progress this week: We cut another scene out of the script, bringing it down to 9, and are in the process of restructuring it to accommodate that. I think it's safe to say that we now only need to make minor edits for clarity and length. There will always be more work to do, but in my opinion we've finished our writing stage! Next week's task: I'd like to share this with proofreaders and do another round of minor edits.
Animation progress this week: Emily has made some great progress on the reference art I'll need to build out an Oculus Quill demo, and on our comic panels for Scene 4.
Technical progress this week: I made a list of Unity experiments that I need to do and made some progress on it. We've decided to do more Oculus Quill animations, so figuring out how to bring Quill scenes into Unity is a big priority for me right now, and I'm almost done learning how. I'm also reaching out to some experts about how to technically handle one of our most frequent animations.
Audio progress this week: Xavier and Phu have been working hard, and we have demos for more than half of our scenes now. This week, Emily and I spent some time looking for sound inspiration and references for them to use. I also worked on getting timing estimates for each scene and rough timestamps for major soundtrack events.
Unity Progress
Upcoming tasks for me: make one more quick round of script edits and send it out to a couple friends. Brainstorm interactions for our final scene. Get as many experiments done as possible. VOICE! ACTORS!!
Excerpt from Emily's Post
This week Lillie and I continued working on timing tests and sound design. We had a team meeting to discuss which songs of our sound lead Xavier’s we liked, and discussed how he could alter them slightly in tempo or mood to match our desired sound visions. We also pulled several more sound design inspirations to send over to our team to consider, and with this info we were able to mostly fill out our sound task sheet, delegating tasks and solidifying moods and themes.
We altered course a little bit for our sound goals– for many scenes, we were planning on allowing time for user interaction/input, but decided to implement more looping background instrumental music so our voice actors aren’t dependent on timing and vice versa, and also to allow for simpler coding. This will allow us to be more flexible with our song choices and plans for adding voice acting. This sound design planning has been extremely helpful not only to visualize scenes better, but also to finalize timing, which will allow us to prioritize producing visuals for certain scenes over others.
In addition to sound design, I finished planning out much of the visual content that will occur for each scene. I storyboarded most of the comic panels of the tattoo scene…
